Awards and Scholarships

Departmental Scholarships for Entering Students

All Virginia Tech applicants indicating statistics as an intended major are automatically considered by the Department of Statistics for all scholarships which the department has the authority to award. Any scholarship awards are contingent on your applying for and being offered admission to Virginia Tech. Awards are based on information provided to Virginia Tech on your application for admission. All scholarship funds are applied to your tuition bills during your freshman year provided you remain a statistics major for the entire academic year.

To receive any financial aid while at Virginia Tech, you need to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid and have the results submitted to Virginia Tech (Federal ID Number 003754).

Departmental Scholarships for Returning Students

In order to be considered for departmental scholarships, returning statistics majors must apply for scholarships annually. All current majors will be sent an email with the application form and instructions.  Scholarship funds are applied to your tuition bills provided you remain a statistics major during the entire academic year the award is given. Scholarship amounts are based on the availability of funds.

Senior Awards

Each May, the Department of Statistics selects up to four graduating seniors to receive various awards.  These include the Whitfield Cobb Award for outstanding scholarship (typically awarded to 2 students), the Clyde Y. Kramer Award for outstanding service, and the Undergraduate Research Award for outstanding research.  Recipients are chosen by the Department of Statistics faculty.
