- Instructor: Megan Lutz
- Class Times: MWF 10:10-11:00 AM (SQUIR COLNL), T 4:00-4:50 PM (TORG 1060)
- TA: Me, Jon Celso!
- My E-Mail: jrcelso 'at' vt.edu
- Educational Background: B.S., Mathematical Sciences, Loyola College in Maryland, 2007
M.S., Statistics, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 2008
- Where's My Office:
403-D Hutcheson Hall. Go to the fourth floor of Hutcheson. Make a right
turn at the top of the stairs. Walk straight into the Teaching Assistant
area. Go to the aisle on the right and walk straight back. My office is
on the right hand-side.
- Office Hours:
Tuesdays from 2:15-3:45 PM and Thursdays from 1:15-2:15 PM. If you cannot make the office hours I scheduled, e-mail me to find out when we can set up
an appointment or arrange for you to come to office hours on another day. DO NOT show up during office hours
for the other sections that I have scheduled. I put aside some time specifically for this section and some time for
the other sections. Likewise, the other sections are not allowed to come to office hours
that I scheduled for your section. Keep posted for changes to these hours.
- Cell Phones: Like lecture, cell phones are to be set on silent/vibrate or turned off completely
during class meetings. Any phone that rings during class time may be answered by the TA. If a cell phone is even visible during
an in-class quiz, it will be considered a violation of the Honor Policy.
- Honor Policy: Students in this class are subject to Virginia Tech's Academic Honor Policy
as it is currently written.
- Quizzes:
If homework is given back during a recitation, I will give a 5-minute quiz
that will relate to a concept that was covered in that homework. This will
be an opportunity to gain back points that you lost on the homework. You
can receive up to 5 points, and there will only be one problem to work on.
You cannot score over 100 on the homework with the extra quiz points (for example, if you get a 98 and a 5 out of 5 on the quiz, your new score will be 100, not 103). I will NOT return these quizzes unless you want
to discuss the quiz during my office hours. Solutions to the quiz will be available on Blackboard after I include the quiz grades into the HW grades on Blackboard.
If you are absent for the quiz, you must provide me with documentation in order to take a make-up quiz. Athletes,
you must provide me with a coach's letter to show me that you will miss a recitation section, so that I can provide you with
a make-up quiz. ***NOTE:
This policy is subject to change during the course of the semester, but you will not lose any points that you have earned
before the policy change.***
- Homework: As stated in the lecture syllabus, assigned homework will be returned
during the recitation section. I will return the homeworks, make general comments, and entertain some questions you may have.
If you have a detailed question, I may be able to answer it during class, or you can swing by my office or e-mail me.
- Homework Format: Make sure you follow the checklist in the lecture's syllabus. You will
lose points for failure to follow these guidelines.

- Please do not be afraid to e-mail me or drop by
my office. I may be there outside office hours, but there's no guarantee.
My office hours are a promise I have with you that I will definitely be
there to help you out at a specific time.
- I'm here to help you succeed in
not only passing this course, but I also hope that you will use this material
to some degree in your future endeavors.
- VT is a new experience for me. I have never been
this far south before in my life, and I knew nothing about VT or Blacsburg
culture. So I encourage you to stop by to give me any pointers about places
to check out around campus or around town. I have a lot of interests.
- I don't bite; I promise.
